Since Brexit, there are new rules for the transport of goods between the European Union and the United Kingdom.
Two important concepts are GVMS (Goods Vehicle Movement Service) and inventory-linked transport.
But what do these terms mean and which option is most suitable for your company?
GVMS
GVMS is a digital system used to track the movement of freight wagons between the EU and the UK. Before you leave for England with a lorry, you must apply for a so-called Goods Movement Reference (GMR) via GVMS. This GMR is linked to your lorry and serves as a kind of passport for the border crossing.
Advantages of GVMS:
- Faster flow: By providing all the necessary information prior to the trip, Customs can process the formalities faster
- Less paperwork: All communication with Customs is digital
Inventory Linked
In inventory-linked transport, the goods may be held in a warehouse in England before they can be transported further or the trailer may remain in the port until it is fully released. The shipment must be claimed by the Customs agent and the customs declaration is only made after the goods have arrived in the UK.
Advantages of inventory-linked transport:
- More flexibility: You have more time to submit the correct Customs declaration
- Less risk of errors: The goods can be checked before they are released
